Masigcine (which means, “let us cherish”) is a registered Children’s Home, in Mfuleni, where 28 orphaned, abandoned and HIV infected little children between the ages of 3–months and 6–years of age live. These children are referred to Masigcine by Social Workers via the Children’s Court.
This Children’s Home was started in 1989 when a social worker from the community saw the need of the destitute children in the area and with the help of Rev. Eddie Schaeffler, the Chairman of the Church Council of the Dutch Reformed Church in Kuilsriver, Masigcine was born. A group of business men from Kuilsriver contributed to the building costs for the erection of the Children’s Home. The women of the Dutch Reformed Church congregation helped with fund raising to finish, furnish and equip the facility.
Masigcine is now under the protection of the United Reformed Church of Southern Africa – Mfuleni Congregation.
